Rice types

Worldwide, there are more than 40,000 different varieties of rice. Often times, rice is categorized by its size as being either short grain, medium grain or long grain. Another way of classification is according to the degree of milling that it undergoes. This is what makes brown rice different from white rice.
Thus, the most important differences between varieties of rice are their cooking characteristics, shapes, colors and, in some cases, a subtle flavor difference.

Wild Rice

Wild rice is a plant that originated in North America, where today is considered a delicacy. Although it appears to have been found from early times in China, today it is rarely consumed in this region. Wild rice, even though it presents many of the particularities found in other rice types, is not directly related to it (which belongs to the species Oryza Sativa). This grain is usually consumed in association with parboiled or basmati rice.


It is mainly used as garnish for various meat based dishes, but also in rice salads, its cooking time being, in general, 15-16 minutes.
