1600 AD

In 1694, rice arrived in South Carolina, probably originating from Madagascar. Enterprising colonists were the first to cultivate rice in America. The Spanish brought rice to South America at the beginning of the 18th century. This region has had as much success with cultivating rice as have European countries, where the climate was ideal, like parts of Italy and Spain.
